Smooth Espresso Roast Coffee Beans

Low-Acid Costa Rican

Espresso isn’t a bean. It isn’t even a roast. It’s a brewing method — and a damn good one.

We just took the exact same premium Tarrazu Costa Rican beans we use for our Barely Dark Roast, roasted them low-and-slow to the perfect dark brown, and slapped an “Espresso” label on the bag. Same ultra-low acid, same rich chocolate and cherry notes, same zero-bitterness swagger.

So whether you’re pulling shots on a fancy machine or just brewing it strong in a French press, this is the one that actually tastes like espresso should — smooth, bold, and never bitter.

Hey there, espresso skeptics! I’m Russell Volz from Lake City Coffee Roasters, and today we’re talking about something I used to openly mock: espresso.

Full confession — I’ve always been a bit of an espresso snob. Not the fancy kind… the “I don’t like it” kind. Every espresso I’d ever tried tasted like bitter mud that could double as wheel-bearing degreaser. So when I walked into a friend’s kitchen and saw this ridiculous $2,000 espresso machine that looked like Elon Musk designed it in his sleep, I thought, “Here we go again.”

Then he told me he’s a regular customer of ours. I said, “Wait — you’re using my beans in that thing?” He said yep. So I asked for a straight shot — no milk, no fufu, just pure espresso like the Italians drink it.

I took that first sip fully expecting the worst… and damn near swallowed my tongue in surprise. It was smooth. Thick, rich, and actually smooth. By the third sip I could clearly taste the chocolate and cherry notes. I looked at him like he’d just pulled off a magic trick.

We even tried it on my cheapo secondhand 20-year-old espresso machine back at the roastery. Not quite as perfect as Eric’s spaceship, but still shockingly good. Turns out the beans are doing most of the heavy lifting.

So yeah… espresso isn’t a bean or a roast — it’s a brewing method. But when you start with the right beans, it can actually taste like something you want to drink instead of something you need to survive the morning.

Why the Same Beans We Use for Our Dark Roast Become Killer Espresso

Here’s the dirty little secret about espresso. Everyone’s espresso. It’s not a special bean, it’s not a special roast, and it sure as hell isn’t a special blend. Espresso is just a brewing method. Plain and simple.

Our espresso beans comes straight out of the same batch as our dark roast. The only difference is the label. Yet, our little label switch is no different than everyone else’s. Well… except that we tell you so.

So, what makes one espresso better than another? The exact same thing that makes one dark roast better than another; the right bean, the right roast, and a freshness that’s measured in hours instead of months.

That’s why this roast delivers rich, thick, chocolate-cherry flavor and a crema that stands up and salutes, without any of the bitterness most people expect from espresso. It’s the same great bean… just wearing a different hat.

Why We Bothered with Rainforest Alliance Instead of Just Saying “Organic”

“Organic” sounds nice on a label — basically means they didn’t spray the beans with the really nasty stuff. Cool story.

We went with Rainforest Alliance Certified because it actually does a whole lot more than check a few boxes. Every bag of our Espresso Roast comes from Hacienda La Minita, a Rainforest Alliance Certified estate in Costa Rica’s Tarrazu region. That certification means the plantation is protecting wildlife corridors, conserving water, rebuilding healthy soil, and making sure the people growing the beans get fair pay and decent working conditions.

In other words, it’s not just about what isn’t sprayed on your coffee — it’s about the whole ecosystem and the farmers not getting screwed in the process. And the part that’s the most important to us is that you can actually taste the difference. If you couldn’t, we wouldn’t go through the extra hassle.

Why This Espresso Roast Is Silky & Easy on Your Stomach

Here’s the part that still surprises even me: this roast is amazingly strong and yet gently smooth at the same time. How can that be? It’s kind of like Alisha giving me a playful, but sharp slap me in the face, followed up with a world-class kiss. This espresso hurts so good. Want to know the secrete? Check out my article “My First Great Espresso Experience“.

How do we do it? It starts with the same ultra-low-acid Tarrazu beans we use for our Barely Dark Roast. We don’t scorch them into oblivion like a lot of “espresso” roasts do. We roast them low and slow, so the natural oils stay put and the acid stays way down. The result is rich chocolate and cherry flavor that actually tastes good… without the usual dark-roast punishment.

I’ve had customers tell me they can drink shots strong and straight — and their stomach doesn’t file a complaint the next morning. That still blows my mind a little. Turns out the secret isn’t magic beans. It’s just not burning the hell out of them.

How to Brew a Killer Espresso Roast (Spoiler: It’s Stupidly Forgiving)

Here’s the thing most people get wrong about espresso: it’s a brewing method, not a special bean or a fancy roast. We just took the exact same premium Tarrazu beans we use for our Barely Dark Roast, roasted them low and slow to the perfect very dark brown (almost black), and gave the bag an “Espresso” name tag.

The result? A roast that behaves beautifully no matter how you attack it.

Pull a straight shot on a fancy machine or even a manual espresso, or even a Moka Pot — it still comes out thick, rich, chocolaty smooth with zero bitterness and crema that will blow you away. These beans are ridiculously forgiving.

Freshness Guarantee: Because Stale Espresso Tastes Like Yesterday’s Regret

Here’s the dirty truth about espresso: when you brew it strong (which is kind of the whole point), any staleness in the bean gets magnified like a bad karaoke performance.

That’s why we roast these beans to order every single Tuesday morning — the exact same premium Tarrazu beans we use for our Barely Dark Roast. They come out of the roaster piping hot, get cooled, weighed, double-sealed, and hit the truck the same day.

You’re drinking coffee that was still roasting less than 24–72 hours ago. No warehouse time. No “best by” date that’s already laughing at you. Just fresh, lively beans that deliver thick, kick-in-the-butt rich chocolaty flavor. And the crema? It’s so thick and persistent it could survive a bad marriage.

Got Espresso Questions? We’ll Give you the Straight Shot Answers

What is smooth espresso roast coffee?

It’s not a magical “espresso bean” grown on a secret Italian hillside. It’s the exact same premium Tarrazu Costa Rican beans we use for our Dark Roast — we just roast them to the perfect dark brown and slap an “Espresso” label on the bag because that’s how most people are going to use them.

Is this espresso roast as smooth as your other roast?

It’s actually smoother when you brew it strong — which is kind of the whole point of espresso. The low-acid beans and gentle roast keep the chocolate and cherry notes alive without any of that bitter “I regret my life choices” aftertaste most espresso delivers.

What flavor notes are in your espresso roast?

Rich dark chocolate with a bright cherry finish that hangs around longer than your last bad date. It’s bold, thick, and still ridiculously smooth — exactly what you want when you’re pulling shots.

Are these low-acid espresso beans good for sensitive stomachs?

Huge yes. Even when you brew it strong (the way espresso was meant to be), this roast stays surprisingly gentle on the gut. Plenty of customers tell me they can finally enjoy real espresso without their stomach filing a formal complaint the next morning.

How fresh are your espresso beans?

Roast-to-order every Tuesday morning and shipped the same day. You’re getting beans that were still hot a day or two ago. That’s our quirky little edge — and it makes a massive difference when you’re brewing it strong.

What are the best ways to brew smooth espresso coffee?

Daaahhhh… With an espresso machine?

Can I use these beans in an espresso machine?

Heck yeah — that’s literally why we put the label on the bag. Espresso is a brewing method, not a bean. Pull a straight shot, make a latte, whatever you want. Customers do it every day and keep coming back for more. For a first-hand account of how well these beans work with espresso, check out my article “My First Great Espresso Experience.”
