Smooth Decaf Roast Coffee Beans
Low-Acid Swiss Water Processed
Most decaf coffee tastes like it was made by someone who hates coffee. Not this one. We start with the same premium Costa Rican beans we use for all our roasts, then gently remove the caffeine using the 100% chemical-free Swiss Water Process. The result? A smooth, chocolate-and-cherry decaf that actually tastes like real coffee — zero bitterness, zero stomach drama, and practically zero caffeine. This is the decaf that makes people stop mid-sip and say, “Wait… this is decaf?”

Hey there, decaf dreamers! I’m Russell Volz from Lake City Coffee Roasters, and today we’re talking about the decaf that actually tastes like real coffee.
Most decaf out there is basically a crime scene. Over 90% of it gets blasted with nasty chemical solvents that sound like they belong in a mad-scientist lab — no thanks. Then it sits on shelves for months (sometimes years) until it tastes like stale regret. No wonder people think decaf sucks.
We do it the right way. We start with the same premium Tarrazu Costa Rican beans we use for all our roasts, then send them off for the 100% chemical-free Swiss Water Process. It’s basically a spa day for beans — pure water and reverse osmosis gently pull out the caffeine while leaving all the good stuff behind. No solvents, no weird aftertaste, just smooth chocolate and cherry notes with basically zero caffeine (2–3 mg per cup).
Then we roast them low and slow — never the hot-and-hasty microwave method most roasters use. That gentle touch keeps every bit of flavor and zero bitterness. The result? A decaf so good you’ll do a double-take and ask, “Wait… this is decaf?”
We roast to order every Tuesday morning, cool ’em, bag ’em, and ship the same day so you’re drinking beans that were still hot off the roaster just 24–72 hours ago. That’s our quirky little edge — and once you try it, you’ll get why customers keep saying this is the best decaf they’ve ever had.

Why Tarrazu Beans Make Our Decaf Taste Like the Real Thing
Each year Alisha and I bring in 20–30 different bean samples from the top plantations in Costa Rica. Why do we keep coming back to Costa Rica? Because it’s the sweet spot for smooth, low-acid beans that still pack real flavor — exactly what you need when you’re taking the caffeine out.
Alisha, our in-house wine sommelier and taste-testing wizard, puts every sample through the full swirl-sip-spit routine. We spend a whole day judging them like coffee judges on a reality show until we pick the winner.
After decaffeination via the Swiss Water Process, we then roast them low and slow to a perfect medium-dark. The result is chocolate and cherry notes that actually taste like coffee — not like some sad, watery impostor. If you like smooth decaf that doesn’t taste like decaf, these are the beans that deliver.
Why Rainforest Alliance Certification Beats Plain Old “Organic”
“Organic” is fine — it just means they skipped the synthetic pesticides. Nice try.
We went with Rainforest Alliance Certified because it actually does a whole lot more. Every bag of our Decaf Roast comes from Hacienda La Minita, a Rainforest Alliance Certified estate in Costa Rica’s Tarrazu region. That certification means the farm is actively protecting wildlife corridors, conserving water, rebuilding healthy soil, and paying workers fair wages with decent living conditions.
In other words, it’s not just about what isn’t sprayed on the beans — it’s about the entire ecosystem and the people growing them actually doing well. And the part we really care about? You can taste the difference in every cup. If you couldn’t, we wouldn’t bother.

5 Reasons This Low-Acid Decaf Roast Is Stupidly Gentle on Your Stomach
It already tastes like real coffee instead of sad decaf — but the best part is what it doesn’t do to your stomach. Because we start with ultra-low-acid Tarrazu beans and then take the caffeine out gently with the Swiss Water Process, this roast is one of the easiest on the gut we’ve ever made.
Here’s what you actually get:
- No indigestion — even first thing in the morning
- No acid reflux — you can actually enjoy a second cup without regret
- No bloating — it just sits nicely
- No emergency bathroom runs — you know what I mean
- Zero caffeine jitters + ultra-low acid = the gentlest cup of coffee you’ll ever drink
How to Brew a Damn Good Cup of Decaf (Yes, It’s Possible)
Here’s the beautiful thing about our Swiss Water Decaf: it’s stupidly forgiving. You don’t have to treat it like a delicate snowflake — it brews smooth and flavorful pretty much no matter what you throw at it.
That said, the methods that let the grounds hang out with hot water for a bit really let those chocolate and cherry notes wake up and shine.
Best ways: • French Press (my evening go-to) • AeroPress • Cold Brew • Slow Pour-Over
Pro tip: Swing by our “Best Smooth Brewing Gear” page for my exact recommendations — the Red Rooster grinder, Bodum French Press, or AeroPress all make this decaf taste like it still has caffeine (but it doesn’t).

Freshness Guarantee: Our Decaf Never Gets Boring
If it’s not that fresh when it lands on your doorstep, we’ll make it right. No questions asked.
The fresher the beans, the better the cup — especially when it’s decaf. Once caffeine is gently removed, those chocolate and cherry notes can fade faster than most people realize.
That’s why we roast every batch to order every single Tuesday morning. The beans come out of the roaster piping hot, get cooled, weighed, double-sealed in the bag, and hit the truck the same day.
You’re drinking coffee that was still roasting less than 24–72 hours ago — fresher than almost anything you’ll find on a grocery shelf or from the big online roasters.
Swiss Water Decaf FAQs? We’ve Got Answers
What is smooth decaf roast coffee?
Like all our roasts, our Decaf starts with premium Costa Rican beans, gets the same low-and-slow roasting, ships the same day, and is just as easy on your stomach. The only thing missing is the caffeine.
What makes ours different is we decaffeinate using the 100% natural Swiss Water Process — no harsh chemicals at all. And unlike most competitors who burn the snot out of their beans, we roast ours to a perfect medium-dark. That gentler approach keeps all the bean’s natural oils and real chocolate-cherry flavor intact.
Is this decaf roast as smooth as your other roast?
Even smoother, actually. Because we never blast it with harsh chemicals, the natural oils stay right where they belong and the low acid really shines through. A lot of customers actually prefer the mouthfeel of our decaf over our regular coffee — which still blows my mind every time I hear it.
A very popular blend with our customers is mixing 50% medium or dark with 50% decaf. Even folks with sensitive stomachs or who are sensitive to caffeine seem to find this blend very agreeable. It’s like the best of both worlds without the drama.
What flavor notes are in your Swiss Water decaf?
Rich dark chocolate with a cherry finish that just keeps on going and going and going. We’ve never tasted a decaf with a finish like this — it’s almost unbelievable.
The part that really blows my mind is that our customers keep telling me it tastes better than our regular roasts. That’s nuts… but it’s true. Take a look at our Google reviews — it seems like almost half of them are straight-up raving about the decaf.
This decaf is one of a kind. It tastes so much like our regular roasts that people regularly do the double-take “wait… this is decaf?” sip.
Are these low-acid decaf beans good for sensitive stomachs?
Huge yes. The ultra-low acid + Swiss Water Process makes this one of the gentlest coffees on the gut we’ve ever offered. I’ve heard the same thing from customers for 11 years.
So why is this decaf so much easier on your stomach? Well, it’s got several things going for it, that you’re not likely to find anywhere else. First the beans are naturally low-acid. Secondly, most companies over roast their decaf. We don’t; same low-n-slow dark brown roast.
How fresh are your decaf beans?
Roast-to-order every Tuesday morning and shipped the same day. You’re getting beans that were still hot a day or two ago — that’s our quirky little edge.
What are the best ways to brew smooth decaf coffee?
If your brewing method works for you with regular beans, then it’ll work with our decaf just as well. So, any method works great, but the ones that let the grounds steep for a while let the flavor bloom: French Press, AeroPress, cold brew, or slow pour-over. A good burr grinder helps because these beans are tough little buggers.
Can I use these beans in an espresso machine?
Absolutely. Espresso is a brewing method, not a bean. Lots of customers blend it with our dark or espresso roast and love the results.
For a first-hand account of how well these beans work with espresso, check out my article “My First Great Espresso Experience.”
Do you have free shipping?
Absolutely — order three or more bags and FedEx 1–2 day shipping is on us. Don’t be surprised if the box is still warm.
