Bodum Chambord French Press – Review

I (Russell) have not been this excited about a piece of coffee equipment in quite a while. In this Bodum Chambord French Press Review you’ll learn how this $53 French Press stacks up against much more expensive French Presses.

Bodum Chambord French Press

Bodum Inc.

Bodum, Inc is a Danish-Swiss kitchenware manufacturer headquartered in Switzerland. It was founded in Denmark in 1944 by Peter Dodum. The company moved to Switzerland in 1978 by his son, Jorgen.

Bodum has manufacturing facilities in nearly a dozen different countries including: Portugal, Germany, Poland, France, etc., and of course China. All of their products are designed in their Switzerland headquarters.

Components

There’s nothing new with this French Press. The container is made of glass. Plastic is sparsely used in the handle, plunger, and lid screen. All these plastic parts are BPA free. The container cage, all internal parts, and most of the lid are made of stainless steel.

As in all French Presses, the key parts are push plates on top of and below the wire filter screen. These parts are critical in keeping a good seal against the glass container in order to keep the grounds trapped in the bottom of the container and thus out of your cup of coffee.

Aesthetics

This French Press looks pretty much like any other French Press. I’ve seen prettier ones and I’ve seen uglier ones. I personally don’t care what it looks like. When I’m done making the coffee, it goes into the dishwasher and then from the dishwasher into the cupboard. So, looks are unimportant to me.

On the other hand, there are folks out there that want a cool looking French Press. Fortunately, for those folks, Bodum makes an identical Chambord French Press with a copper coating on the stainless steel and also one with a gold chrome coating on the stainless steel.

Function

The plunger on the Bodum Chambord French Press is easily and smoothly pushed down. This Bodum also pours the coffee out directly without dripping, and leaves behind all the grounds. It just plain works flawlessly and easily.

There’s only one feature that they might have included and that’d be if it was vacuum insulated, to retain heat better and prevent the container from accidentally being dropped and broken.

Taste, Grounds, & Sediment

On occasion, some coffee brewers that have the water touching metal will impart some metallic taste to your coffee. Generally, that’s not an issue with good quality stainless steel. In this case, I can detect no residual taste, just plain good coffee.

With some cheap French Presses, the seal between the screen filter and the sides of the container can leave gaps, thus allowing grounds to end up in your coffee mug. That’s not the case here. After dozens of cups of coffee, I’ve found zero grounds in my coffee.

As for sediment, sediment is to be expected with a French Press. Americans are the only coffee drinkers on Earth that freak out if there’s a little sediment in their coffee. If you don’t like sediment, then buy yourself a Keurig, which by the way, makes the worst coffee in the world.

Bodum Chambord French Press Durability

Granted, I’ve only had this French Press for a few weeks. After close examination, I don’t see any reason why the Bodum Chambord French Press won’t last as long as any other French Press. All you have to do is clean it regularly, just rinse, add some soap and water, shake, rinse again, set out to dry. Piece of cake.

If you don’t drop the glass container, then this French Press should last for years. And if you do drop and break the glass container, so what a replacement is only $26.00

Pro’s & Con’s

Pros

    • Simple
    • Works great
    • Easy to assemble and dis-assemble
    • Easy to clean
    • No grounds in my coffee cup
    • Made In Portugal

Cons

    • Not Made In USA
    • Not all Bodum French Presses are made in Portugal. I recently purchased a stainless steel, vacuum insulated, Bodum French Press that was advertised as being made in Portugal, but when it arrived, there was a sticker on the box that said “Made In China”. I won’t have any of that China crap in my house.
    • The Gold-Chrome and Copper versions of this same French Press may or may not be made in Portugal, i.e., they’re most likely made by slave labor in China.

Compared to a $259.95 Italian Made Alessi French Press

I must say, the Alessi is an awesome French Press. It’s attractive and it works very well. The big downside is the price and secondly, breaking the glass container is easy. Bust one of those babies and you’re looking at another $38.15 to replace it (been there, done that).

Now, comparing the Bodum Chambord French Press to the Alessi French Press, honestly, there isn’t much difference. The components look almost exactly the same. Even the drilled holes in the upper and lower screen supports align almost exactly. I wouldn’t be surprised if the same company designed or built both.

So, what’s the big difference between the Bodum Chambord French Press and the Alessi French Press? About $200. That’s the only significant difference.

Lake City Coffee

Lake City Coffee is a small mom-n-pop online coffee roasting company. Since we answer to no one, we source the beans that we like. We roast them the way we like. And our customers get what’s left over, shipped to them the very same day that they’re roasted.

Alisha and I love coffee that’s smooth as silk, with subtle notes of chocolate, citrus, and nut. Since 2015, we’ve found the best source for these beans to be the Terrazu Region of Costa Rica. After taste testing two dozen beans from this region, we select the very best. With 1 bean and 3 roasts, the selection process is pretty simple.

If you have any questions, please let us know. We will usually get back to you within 24 hours.
